California Moves Towards A System Of Safe Medicine Disposal!
Senate Bill 966 has been signed by Governor Schwarzenegger!
Thank you to everyone who voiced their support for SB 966! The bill, authored by Senator Joe Simitian, establishes a safe disposal system for unwanted pharmaceuticals. The bill begins a state-wide initiative to reduce pharmaceutical pollution in our environment and in our water systems.
When pharmaceuticals are flushed down the drain or
disposed of in landfills they can infiltrate the groundwater. The USGS has found pharmaceuticals in a majority of the waterways it has tested. Many
compounds common in streams, such as antidepressants, have known adverse affects on fish and unknown affects in other wildlife and humans.
SB 966 creates model disposal programs and requires the California Integrated Waste Management Board to develop a plan for potential state-wide implementation. We will keep you updated as this plan develops, thank you again for supporting safe disposal!
