Margo Roman, DVM
“It is important that the environment in which we work is energy balanced, aesthetically pleasing and environmentally healthy,” says Dr. Margo Roman, a holistic veterinarian practicing in Hopkinton, Mass, “In a career where we connect to such an important part of nature, it is crucial that we work WITH nature in the creation of a healthy and healing atmosphere.”

Dr. Roman, DVM, has integrated a variety of ecologically sustainable modalities, such as homeopathy and acupuncture, into her biomedical practice, Main Street Animal Services of Hopkinton (MASH). She also believes in providing a safe, comfortable space as an added element in healing. She wants the animals to feel as though they were walking into a friend’s living room instead of a clinical environment.

For air fragrance and cleansing, aromatherapy diffusers are lit with healing and relaxing oils such as lavender and frankincense. For table and counter cleaning the clinical staff prefers non toxic cleaners such as, like citrus, lemon, tea tree, lavender and other essential oil based products An Air Bear filtration system helps remove additional impurities.

The easily opened clinic windows provide a way to air out viruses or odors while also bathing the space in natural light. Using full spectrum bulbs achieves better lighting and is much healthier for the eyes and general health of all. MASH also uses an ultraviolet virus light in the ceiling duct to reduce circulating bacteria. For insulation, Dr. Roman and her staff wanted to find something with a high R factor and effective soundproofing, that is also nontoxic, nonirritating and fireproof. They chose Bonded Logic, a material manufactured from recycled blue jeans.

In addition to the built environment, MASH relies on ecologically friendly raw fresh diets and offers some high quality dry and canned foods. Education is an important part of her practice, so the animals’ caretakers are taught preventive healthcare by utilizing the best fresh foods, which preferably are organic.

MASH is designed following the principles of Feng Shui (Wind and Water). Integrating the idea that every object, color, shape, symbol, smell, and sound in a room can affect its energy, this ancient oriental system addresses nine life areas. Feng Shui increases harmony, love, prosperity, creativity, wisdom, family, health, and career areas by reducing undesirable energies and increasing positive “chi”, the Chinese concept of life force. To slow down and direct the chi, MASH uses glass, bells mirrors, crystals, chimes and banners help

The Clinics’ holistic care rooms have massage tables, floor mats and exercise balls for the comfort of pets and clients alike. Soft meditative flute music is piped into room. Clients appreciate their pet’s lack of fear and anxiety about their visit to the doctor. “The ultimate compliment”, Dr. Roman says “is when a client expresses surprise that this place doesn’t look, smell or feel like a regular vet’s office!”
