The physical environment is one of the single most important determinants of human health. As numerous studies have demonstrated, protection of the water, air, food and the larger global ecosystem has a direct correlation to the prevention of illness and the preservation of health. In this context, healthcare practitioners have a vital role to play as environmental stewards, a role which has been largely undeveloped in our current healthcare system.

Our current gold-standard for healthcare is based on unsustainable practices and technologies that are so costly and resource-intensive that they cannot be extended to the majority of Americans. When coupled with increasing environmental challenges across the globe, we are facing a situation where what is defined as the best healthcare cannot even begin to meet the current and future needs of the global population. Sustainable, cost-effective and widely available medical practices must be prioritized wherever possible.

At Teleosis, we believe that a sustainable healthcare system will find its foundation in health professionals who integrate a broad understanding of environmental health issues and concerns into their medical services. This knowledge will enable them to better understand the factors that create health and disease, serve as spokespeople for environmentally sound prevention and care strategies, and create new models for sustainable healthcare and wellness.

Teleosis exists to enable healthcare practitioners achieve these goals, building a movement for positive social and environmental change within the healthcare community.
