Teleosis recognizes Naturopath as Environmental Advocate

“Some partnerships just seem destined and replete with long lasting benefits for the larger community,” says Teleosis Executive Director Dr. Joel Kreisberg, referring to green health care leader Marianne Marchese.

After relocating to the Bay Area earlier this year, Dr. Marianne Marchese was referred to Teleosis by a friend and soon found the Institute to be a valuable resource for own continuing education and for that of her patients. As a specialist in the field of Environmental Medicine, her decision to become involved in the Green Health Care Program came naturally. Dr. Marchese, a board certified Naturopathic Doctor, understands and values the naturopathic principles of “the healing power of nature” and “first do no harm.” In her practice, she utilizes an integrative model of health care that respects the body’s natural healing process, specializing in Women's Health and Environmental Medicine in her practice.

Dr. Marchese is actively engaged in the Environmental Health Advocate and Green Workplace components of the Teleosis Institute's Green Health Care Program, which prepares health professionals as role models and leaders for sustainable health care. For Dr. Marchese, “Green Health Care means creating an environmentally safe place in which to treat patients, while having the least harmful impact on the environment.” This visionary program facilitates health professionals in creating offices with smaller ecological footprints, educating their patients and communities about local environmental health issues, and practicing medicine that is good for people and the environment. Through personal action, Green Health Care participants further their knowledge of environmental health and sustainable medicine, while reaffirming their commitment to environmental action.

As one of the earliest pilot project participants in the Green Health Care Program, Dr. Marchese appreciated how the program “sets a standard for care by practicing ‘what you preach’--hopefully all health care professionals are preaching the harmful effects of toxins in the environment”. Dr. Marchese’s participation in the program has deepened her awareness around environmental advocacy in her practice, which positively affects both her employees and clients. Through education and advocacy, Dr. Marchese improves her “client’s ability to understand and integrate practical solutions that allow people to better their environment, and consequently improve their overall health.” In general, people feel better too, [with] less allergies, headaches and fatigue”, she explains.

In June, Dr. Marchese gave a lecture at the Teleosis Institute called: “Hormone Disruptors: Is your environment making you ill?”, where she discussed how contact with chemicals in our environment can alter your hormonal system, causing illness and disease. As a Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Marchese exemplifies Green Health Care by “recognizing how toxins in the environment can affect health, and then educating people on how to avoid these toxins”. Educating people serves as a critical step towards community engagement and broad-scale prevention at the levels of personal and ecological health.

In her practice, which is housed in an ecologically conscious office, Dr. Marchese offers naturopathic treatments that are clean and renewable, while educating people and advocating for the health of the environment.
