Integral Medicine Program

Integral Health and Medicine Conference in 2011

In 2011, the Teleosis Institute began the development of a program in Integral Medicine. The plan began with a review of the literature completed in February of 2011. The next step was finding a partnership with a strong Integral organization. In August of 2011, Teleosis formed a working partnership with MetaIntegral Foundation, Inc., an emerging institution dedicated to developing professional centers for high impact integral applications. Finally, Teleosis and MetaIntegral collaborated to host a small conference in Westminster, CO, offering 15 health professionals the opportunity to meet, discuss, and offer insights into how to develop a professional center dedicated to bringing Integral Health and Medicine into the forefront of medical thinking within the next five years. We have assembled a report as a brief summary of the work that was completed the weekend of October 21-23, 2011.

The Integral Health and Medicine Center is launching as a distinct professional center as part of the MetaIntegral Foundation’s professional centers. Under the direction of Dr. Joel Kreisberg, DC, CCH, public programs will begin in 2012.

Integral Medicine 101

AQAL

Integral Medicine offers a leading edge approach to medicine that supports individuals, communities and the greater environment. Using the Integral Theory of Ken Wilber, the Teleosis Institute is educating health professionals in applying Integral Theory to medicine and healthcare.

Integral Medicine uses the AQAL Model: All Quadrants, All Lines, All Levels, All States and All Types, to encompass a complete view of medicine and healthcare that includes traditional, conventional and alternative forms of medical practice as well as public health and environmental perspectives. Offering a balance between subjective and objective perspectives, individual and collective, Integral Medicine offers a comprehensive framework that allows multiple perspectives to be united.

Education

Introduction to Integral Medicine
Health professionals can learn the basic AQAL model, in easy to use online learning modules. Please look forward to courses being available in January 2011.

Ecological Medicine
Ecological Medicine is a specific approach to the subject of Integral Health Care that considers three levels of complexity: the personal, the community and the world. Healthcare domains that best represent these three levels of complexity are Medicine (personal health), Public Health (community health) and Environmental Health (world health). Since the earth is a primary determinant of our health, healing, while intensely personal occurs within the context of the physical environment, the social environment as well as the personal holonic ontology of daily living. This course is offered as part of the Masters of Arts in Integral Theory at John F. Kennedy University.

Integral Medicine: Volume 6, Issue 4
The Journal for Integral Theory and Practice
“Since its conception at the first Integral Institute gatherings in 2000, the field of Integral Medicine has been largely nonexistent in that there have been no meetings or events held to develop the field. However, there have been about a dozen articles published over the years in JITP that have contributed to the field, including articles on Integral Healthcare, Integral Medicine, Integral Psychiatry, Integral Nursing, Integral Recovery and subtle energies. This current issue offers articles in all of these areas, thereby nicely building on the momentum that has been emerging over the past five years. One of the things that I feel makes this a strong issue and a great one to (re)launch the field of Integral Medicine is that its content is appropriately wide-ranging, and it provides a great overview of the many ways Integral Theory can be used to support the field as it grows.” - Sean Esbjorn-Hargens, Executive Editor
