Calista Hunter, MD
Calista Hunter, MD, board certified in endocrinology and internal medicine, has recently joined our Board of Directors and describes Teleosis as “a perfect blending of two of my passions, medicine and sustainability.” Hunter specialized in women's health issues, eating disorders, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, weight management, PMS and menopause during the last few decades of her medical practice. Here, she became aware of the strong relationship between the environment, health, and the importance of a sustainable treatment for her patients.
As a doctor and an environmentalist, Hunter sees her role at Teleosis to be involved in the education of other physicians: “Many think that medical doctors are just part of the evil pharma/medical complex. We may be, but I have known doctors all of my life, and I feel that most are caring, kind men and women who are devoted to the health of their patients. I believe that if physicians are educated about ecological medicine, they will be happy to stand for policies that promote the health of their patients.”
Her passion for engaging medical doctors in the sustainable health care movement emphasizes the relationship between the health of the planet with the health of their patients. “If a respiratory physician can be encouraged to take a stand to decrease pollutants in the air, and therefore decrease respiratory illnesses in the patient, we will all benefit. If physicians can see that the antibiotics, hormones, chemotherapeutic agents, etc., that we use may harm our patients, our planet, and the quality of life for our grandchildren, most would stand behind policies that will support both the immediate patient and the rest of the earth.” Throughout the year, Dr. Hunter will be conducting educational programs with Bay Area physicians regarding ecologically sustainable health care.
We want to welcome Calista Hunter, MD to the board and share in her vision where medical doctors will learn the “beauty of green medicine and be the public health leaders that we have always been, becoming the advocates for medical care that is good for the patient and good for the planet.”
