Study Finds Transcendental Meditation Contributes to Reduced Mortality in Patients

A study by Schneider et al, published in The American Journal of Cardiology, showed that Transcendental Meditation (T.M) was highly effective in reducing the rate of death from cardiovascular disease in people with high blood pressure.

The study showed the effects of T.M. on a sample of 202 patients with high blood pressure, whose average age was 72 years old. The results showed that practicing T.M. reduced death rates by 23% in patients from all causes, 30% in those with cardiovascular disease, and 49% in cancer. These figures were in comparison to patients using other mental relaxation techniques or standard drugs for high blood pressure.

This study suggests that utilization of stress decreasing techniques can contribute to a significant decrease in mortality in patients with hypertension. Since the sample size is small, the findings from this preliminary study will need to be confirmed through larger clinical trials.
