Dangerous Chemicals Found in Household Dust

A recent study conducted by Clean Production Action, a Montreal based international nonprofit of the Tides Center in San Francisco, indicates that common household dust contains a variety of hazardous chemicals found in common household products such as Teflon, Gore-Tex and vinyl.

The group collected dust from 70 households in 7 states and analyzed it for perfluorinated compounds. What they found were 35 toxic industrial chemicals that have been linked to reproductive, respiratory and other health problems in humans or test animals.

The most commonly found chemicals were: Phthalates, found in vinyl products, Alkylphenols, often in multi-purpose cleaners, Pesticides, Brominated flame retardants, found in electronics and textiles, Organotin, used in fungicides, and perfluorinated surfactants, often in floor polishes and denture cleaners. (Consider using non-toxic cleaning products in your house!)
