Wander Garden - Effective Therapy for Post Cerebrovascular Stroke Patients
A wander garden can be used as an effective therapy for a post cerebrovascular stroke. The use of a contained natural setting proved effective for restorative therapy in a recently published case study. Garden or Horticultural therapy have proven benefits for those who develop symptoms such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety, and fear and resistance associated with traditional therapy in confined hospital hallway settings.
Nature’s effect on restorative therapy patients:
- improved attention
- stress reduction
- improved mood
- self esteem
- increased confidence and self esteem
- increased strength and endurance
Wander gardens work with restorative therapy patients for a variety of reasons. This includes the placement of gardens away from perceived higher functioning staff, patients, and visitors around whom feelings of embarrassment arise. Another positive aspect of wander gardens is the way in which the hospital hallways extend to the outdoor garden area, emphasizing the move from the inside to the outdoors. The gardens also provide a safe outdoor space without the presence of toxic plants or chemicals, or the risk of falling or getting lost.
