Forrest Batz, PharmD is a natural medicines information consultant, the author of consumer articles, reference and educational materials for health professionals, including the A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions, and serves as a contributing editor of the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. Dr. Batz is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Pharmacy, University of California, San Francisco.
Athena Honore manages the Urban Pesticide Pollution Prevention (UP3) Project at the San Francisco Estuary Project. Previously, she led Save The Bay’s efforts to develop a broader network of convenient, easy-to-use pharmaceutical disposal sites all around the Bay Area, to raise awareness about Bay-safe disposal options, and to reduce flushing of unwanted medications down the drain where they can impact Bay fish and wildlife.
Mark Harvey is the Director of Operations for EXP Pharmaceutical
Services Corp. He has been with EXP for five years and is responsible
for EXP's Fremont, CA operation including Regulatory Compliance. Mark
has been working with several city and county government departments and
state and federal regulatory agencies to find viable solutions for the
problem of waste pharmaceuticals in the water and sewer systems in
Northern California as well as in other states.
Calista Hunter, MD
is board certified in both endocrinology and internal medicine. She attended medical school at Temple University and has practiced in the Diablo Valley since 1985 with a specialization in women's health issues. She has also obtained a MA in Culture and Spirituality and has training in cranio-sacral work. Dr. Hunter is retired and serves as the Supervising Physician for the Green Pharmacy Program.
Jen Jackson coordinates pollution prevention efforts in the Wastewater Department at the East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, CA. She works with businesses, industries and residents to reduce pollution at the source. She has a Master’s degree in Resource Management and Environmental Planning from San Francisco State University’s Geography Department and holds a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Her Master’s thesis is on endocrine disrupters in wastewater.
Karin D. North is an Associate Engineer who specializes in Pollution Prevention for the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Control Plant. She manages programs and special research studies for wastewater and stormwater that include mercury reduction, emerging contaminants, and pharmaceutical collection programs. Ms. North received her bachelor’s degree in environmental science and hydrological science and a master’s degree in environmental science management from the University of California Santa Barbara. She has worked in the environmental field for approximately 10 years.
Ilene S. Ruhoy, MD, PhD holds an assistant professorship in basic and clinical sciences at the Touro University School of Medicine in Henderson, NV. At the same time, Dr. Ruhoy is a doctoral student in the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she also serves on the University's Internal Review Board. In conjunction with her dissertation research, she began collaborating with the U.S. EPA (NERL-Las Vegas) as a Student Volunteer in July of 2006. Her research involves questions surrounding pharmaceuticals as environmental pollutants, particularly with respect to identifying the many sources of exposure that both humans and the environment can experience from medications that are stockpiled by users and eventually disposed of to the environment. Her research is currently segueing into the effects of human exposure.
Robert Turner is a Senior Registerd Environmental Health Specialist for the Marin County Environmental Health Services Department. He implemented the Medical Waste Program (based on the Medical Waste Management Act) and helped develop a Home Generated Sharps Return Program as a point of purchase program at pharmacies.
Rick Vasquez
is the President and Founder of Integrated Waste Control, LLC.
Mr. Vasquez has been involved in the waste industry for the past eighteen years and is a licensed hazardous waste transporter. Integrated Waste Control was founded in 1993 to service the San Francisco Bay Area. It has its corporate office and transfer station in Hayward, California where it has enjoyed a very good relationship in the heart of the bay for the past 12 years. Mr. Vasquez has built his company steadily since its start and now services approximately 3000 clients located in Marin, Sonoma, Napa/Solano, San Mateo, Alameda, San Francisco, and Contra Costa counties.
