Prevent Pollution - Dispose Drugs Safely
Medicines and supplements are turning up in waterways around the world, raising concern about impacts to water quality and habitat.
Jen Jackson, a pollution prevention coordinator in the Wastewater Department at EBMUD, will be at Teleosis to discuss:
- How do drugs make their way into our environment?
- What are their known and potential impacts?
- What are some agencies doing about it?
- What can all of us do to help?
Robert Turner, Registered Environmental Health Specialist, will discuss the success of Marin County's Pharmaceutical Return Program, which now has 14 pharmacies participating in take-back programs.

Bios:
Jen Jackson coordinates pollution prevention efforts in the Wastewater Department at the East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, CA. She works with businesses, industries and residents to reduce pollution at the source. She is earning her Master’s degree in Resource Management and Environmental Planning from San Francisco State University’s Geography Department and holds a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Her Master’s thesis is on endocrine disrupters in wastewater.
Robert Turner is a Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist for the Marin County Environmental Health Services Department. He implemented the Medical Waste Program (based on the Medical Waste Management Act) and helped develop a Home Generated Sharps Return Program as a point of purchase program at pharmacies.
