Environmental Burden and Pharmaceutical Pollution

Thursday, November 1, 2007
9:30 am – 10:05 am

In 2000, the EPA made identifying the risks associated with pharmaceutical waste one of the leading goals for future research. This workshop presented by Dr. Joel Kreisberg reviews current data revealing the presence of persistent concentrations of pharmaceutical medicines in drinking water and discusses its effects on aquatic environments. Presentation and discussion of the 4 Ts (toxicant, totality, tolerance and trajectory) of homeostasis will be discussed. In addition, improvements in current methods of drug delivery, disposal systems and recycling programs to minimize pharmaceutical pollution will be reviewed.

Participants will:
  • Understand the latest information on ecotoxity.
  • Recognize the complex issues involved with pharmaceutical pollution prevention.
  • Learn tools and resources for minimizing the risks associated with pharmaceutical pollution in a medical practice.

This session will conclude with a presentation of six actionable steps that must be taken by physicians to reduce the impact of this emerging problem.
