Westside Family Chiropractic was recently certified as a Green Business in Alameda County through the Bay Area Green Business Program. “I heard about the program from the Teleosis Institute and I decided to learn more,” says Steven Bretow, DC, a member of Teleosis’ Network of Ecologically Sustainable Medicine Professionals. “I knew that chiropractic was ‘greener’ medicine than hospital-based medicine, but I also knew there were more things I could do.”

After completing the ‘green’ audit, Steven Bretow and Ann Honigman, owners of Westside Family Chiropractic, realized that there were many things they could do with minimal effort to make their practice ‘greener’ – healthier and more sustainable for people and for the environment. The biggest focus and effort was in ridding their office of toxic chemicals that had been around for years.

“It turned out to be easier than I thought once I got going. Most steps didn’t take much effort,” says Steven. The office is considering switching to a green cleaning service, which uses less toxic cleaning supplies. To save electricity, new power switches have been placed on office equipment, which can be turned off when not in use. They have also taken steps to purchase green office supplies and to reduce water consumption. Steven says: “I had no idea how much water we used! The simple steps I took are even more useful at home!”

Steven and Ann have been practicing chiropractic for 18 years. Steven specializes in an energy healing technique called BEST in addition to deep tissue work and traditional chiropractic adjusting. He is successful with a variety of conditions particularly sciatica, disk injuries, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Ann practices craniosacral therapy and traditional chiropractic. She has a particular interest in working with disabled children. Westside Family Chiropractic treats people of all ages, from newborns to seniors. Says Steven and Ann: “We like to help everybody!” Their helping and efforts now extend to the environment as well.
