Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MPH, MD, MA

With a list of medical accomplishments a mile long, Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MD enthusiastically joins the Advisory Board. Dr. Bhattacharya currently works serving at a hospital in inner-city Brooklyn, though her path in medicine started in childhood. Through exposure from her parents to both western and ayurvedic medicine, Bhattacharya began early to integrate medicine and adopt a holistic and preventative attitude towards healing. Having grown up in a village in Calcutta India, and then on a farm in Nebraska, she learned environmental consciousness and a respect for nature and the body at a young age. This education in ecological sustainability began to spill over into her medical practice when she realized that she needed to, “walk the talk” when it came to medicine and environmentalism.

One of Bhattacharya’s main goals as an environmentally conscious doctor is to educate her patients and encourage her medical peers to adopt ecologically sustainable practices in their own lives. In her own life she actively uses ecologically minded practices that include taking steps to green her office, promotion of preventative and eco-friendly medicines such as nutrition counseling, herbs and Ayurveda, as well as continuing her environmental education through various programs including our Green Health Care Program at Teleosis.

The advice she gives her patients includes choosing to be a conscious consumers by learning how to read food labels and shopping for locally grown and GMO free food; these two basic changes in habit help strengthen the health of the individual while supporting practices that are safe and non-toxic for the environment. Bhattacharya’s encouragement to use fewer resources stems in part from her recognition of America’s over-consumption and lack of accountability regarding environmental protection on the part of individuals as well as the medical community. Her practice and promotion of ESM helps bring light to these controversial issues.
